The Ostrich and Other Lost Things, by Beth Hautala

The world needs this book.

The Ostrich and Other Lost Things, by Beth Hautala, was a story I could not put down. Seriously. I read it in two days.

Eleven-year-old Olivia wishes things could go back to the way they were before her brother Jacob lost his toy ostrich. Ever since he lost it, his autism has seemed much worse. Olivia loves Jacob, but is frustrated with his meltdowns. She wishes she had a more “normal” family, where they don’t have to do things in any particular way, don’t have to worry about crowds or driving slowly on back roads, and don’t have a bunch of doctors and therapists coming over to the house to “observe”. Maybe, if Olivia can find the toy ostrich, things will go back to how they were before.

When the local community theater holds auditions for a children’s production of Olivia’s favorite play, Peter Pan, Olivia jumps at the chance to do something for herself. She auditions and gets the part of Peter, which is great except that her parents push Jacob to audition too. With Jacob in the play, Olivia knows something will go wrong. It always does.

Of course, things go crazy onstage and off. What’s crazier than a real, live ostrich that keeps escaping from the local traveling zoo and showing up in Olivia’s backyard? Is he trying to send her a message about things that are lost? About the power of Jacob’s toy ostrich to return things to normal?

As Olivia befriends Charlie, a blind boy who lives with his mom in a trailer behind the traveling zoo, she discovers that “normal” doesn’t mean what she thinks it does. Olivia loves Charlie’s positive spirit and willingness to help search for Jacob’s toy. But when Olivia opens up about her frustrations with her brother, Charlie questions her. He says, “So, just to be sure I’m getting this straight, you want the kind of family where everyone is healthy? And where you can do stuff together, and go places together, and everyone behaves themselves, and no one gets too worked up? So, not like the kind of family that lives at a zoo, and where someone is blind or anything? Normal like that?”

Instantly, Olivia is sorry. When she’s around Charlie, it isn’t awkward or scary or weird at all. But understandably, Charlie doesn’t want to be her friend right now. Olivia feels all alone. Jacob’s meltdowns are turning physical, he has an outburst during Peter Pan, and then he destroys her beloved costume.

And then the worst thing of all happens. Jacob goes missing. He runs away from home and Olivia knows it’s because of a mean thing she said to him.

Without giving away too many spoilers, I will leave you with this quote from Charlie, a good friend who teaches Olivia a few things about love and forgiveness:

“Look, people who are hurting say and do hurtful things,” he went on. “…when you hurt someone you love, either by accident or on purpose, you can always go back and work on the broken places. They might not look exactly like they did before, but they can be even better in the end. Stronger.”

And here’s a closing thought from Olivia:

“Charlie and my brother and an ostrich had shown me how to look inside people, where they were the most real, the most lost, and to love them anyway.”

As Olivia says, learning to love is hard.

But there’s nothing more important.

My rating: Five stars. Heartfelt, lyrical writing. A story that will open your heart to the power of unconditional love.

The Ostrich and Other Lost Things is coming February, 2018 from Philomel Books.

Vilonia Beebe Takes Charge

Top Five Reasons You Should Read Vilonia Beebe Takes Charge, by Kristin L. Gray:

1. The premise: Vilonia wants a dog. If she can keep the class goldfish alive over spring break, maybe she can prove she’s responsible enough to take care of a puppy. Plus, a family pet might be just what Mama needs to snap out of her Infinite Sadness.

2. The adorably flawed, lovable narrator: Vilonia brings stray animals home, works to keep her mama from being fired from her job, and worries about her mother, who has been depressed ever since the death of Vilonia’s grandmother.

3. The setting: This story is alive with details of small-town, rural Mississippi, including the annual Catfish Festival, a Miss Catfish Pageant, and runaway hens.

4. The humor: Imagine a story with a flaming goldfish casket, a burning henhouse, a fourth grade obituary writer, and a radio DJ named Richie Rhapsody. Add in a chicken named Eleanor Roosevelt, a puppy named Ray Charles, and a goldfish named Maximus Tropicana. The humor balances the serious issue of Mama’s depression and makes this book a fun, fast-paced read.

5. The heart: “So, Vilonia, baby, yes, you’re a handful, but you’ve also held this family together in more ways than one.”

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Here’s what Kirkus and Publisher’s Weekly had to say:

“Vilonia narrates her story with a colloquial Mississippi twang, punctuating self-effacing descriptions of her well-meaning but oft ill-fated actions with worry about her mother, desire for a dog, and longing for her grandmother.” (Kirkus Reviews January 15, 2017)

“Debut author Gray brings Vilonia’s small Mississippi town to vibrant life, creating a cast of warm, eccentric inhabitants and traditions, including the annual Catfish Festival. Vilonia’s amusing scrapes serve to counterbalance the seriousness of her mother’s condition.” (Publishers Weekly January 9, 2017)

This amazing middle grade will be published by Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books on March 7, 2017.

The author has generously donated a signed classroom set of bookmarks, a $10 Sonic gift card, and an autographed book plate to a reader of this blog. For a chance to win, leave a comment below, along with your email address. If you are a classroom teacher, make sure to note this, as you will receive an extra entry in the giveaway! One winner will be drawn at random.

About The Author:
Kristin L. Gray drinks coffee (cream, no sugar) and writes books (funny, not sad) from her home in northwest Arkansas. She loves to read, walk her dogs, and eat cake for breakfast. She will also travel any chance she gets. Kristin’s fourth-grade self would never believe she has five children, two dogs, one fish, a bearded dragon, and a shy gecko. Vilonia Beebe Takes Charge is her first novel. To learn more about Kristin, or to send her a cake, visit her online at KristinLGray.com.

FROM THE GRAVE by Cynthia Reeg

We've all heard that it's not easy being green, but for young monster Frank Gordon, it's blue that's got him in a tough spot. Frank is a "Misfit Monster" in his home of Uggerland. His skin is blue instead of green and he enjoys combing his hair and keeping tidy. Not very monstrous. He's not alone though, his best friend Oliver is a mummy who can't keep his wrappings on, and there's a whole crew of kids who don't fit the monster mold in one way or another. It's not until there's an edict to get rid of all the misfit monsters that things really heat up and Frank and his friends have to find a way to prove that they are all "monster enough".

Cynthia Reeg's book is chock full of imagination and her inventive language colors Frank's world in a vivid way. Readers will love the awkward, true-hearted protagonist and his friends, and root for them fiercely as they try to prove themselves. The story has serious messages about bullying, and how to find a path to being true to yourself even when it seems like the whole world is against you.

Today I have the opportunity to chat with Cynthia about her work!

Author Cynthia Reeg

MGM: There's an exciting mix of otherworldly creatures in your book. Have you always been fascinated with monsters?

CR: Actually, I was a total scaredy cat as a kid. I'd cover my eyes when the monster appeared on the movie screen and then have bad nightmares for weeks. But I think every kid is fascinated with monsters. They represent our deepest fears and when we face up to them, we are the heroes. Here’s a link to an article on the importance of horror stories for children. When I wrote FROM THE GRAVE, I became Master of the Monsters--for the ones in my book at least.

MGM: How did the idea of "Monster Misfits" develop? What inspired you to write Frank's story?

CR: I think we all feel a bit of a misfit at certain points in our lives. Certainly some are bullied more than others because they don’t seem to fit in. Using monsters as both the tormentors and the underdogs seemed like an intriguing and entertaining way to approach this subject. Initially I planned to write the story as a much shorter chapter book, but Frank and his cohorts quickly convinced me that their tale encompassed much more. And of course, they were right! I’m thrilled that FROM THE GRAVE with its underlying theme of acceptance and anti-bullying premieres during National Bullying Prevention Month.

MGM: How will you be celebrating this Halloween?

CR: On Halloween I’ll be handing out candy to neighborhood kids and enjoying the costumes and jokes. St. Louis is one of the few cities in the U.S. where kids come prepared with a joke before receiving their treat. Stan & Dan, the goofy gargoyle twins from the book, would love Halloween here! I have a HUGE collection of Halloween jokes on my website just in case anyone needs one.

MGM:
That is so cool! I'll definitely check that out! What has been the most exciting part of your publication journey so far?

CR: The most exciting (and scary as well) part is sharing my story with the world. So far the reviews have been awesome. I just participated in an author event last weekend and shared a few clips from my book. A retired reading teacher in the audience came up to me afterwards and told me, “I wish I’d had your book to share with my students when I was teaching. They would have loved it.” That totally made my day. All I say is, “Monster ON!!!”

Thank you for spending some time with us today, Cynthia! Monster on!!

The BFF Bucket List, by Dee Romito

In Dee Romito’s The BFF Bucket List, two best friends are growing apart. The solution? A super fun bucket list of items they must complete by summer’s end: Sleeping outside, getting tattoos, shopping in pjs, breaking a world record, and having a water balloon fight, to name just a few.

In honor of this fun, fast-paced middle grade debut, I decided to make a bucket list for my dog Cooper!

Since Cooper couldn’t write his own list, I took the liberty of hopping over to TheBFFBucketList.com and making one for him! Naturally, being a good-spirited Goldendoodle, Cooper was not only up for the challenge, but wanted to complete his entire list in ONE DAY!  (I know. Pretty impressive. He’s ¾ poodle, which explains the over-achieving tendencies.)

On a lazy Saturday, Cooper woke up, ready to cross items off his list:
1. Long Walk: This turned into more of a run, but it was still fun!

2. Road Trip: This was a challenge. Cooper does not love the car. But he did it, with the promise of frozen yogurt, yet to come!!!

3. Random Act of Kindness: Cooper helped me donate a box of clothes to Goodwill. He was unwilling to part with any of his toys, but maybe next time.

3. Fro Yo: This frozen confection was gone in less than thirty seconds.

4. Steak Dinner on Fancy China: Yes, my dog dined on beef tenderloin.

 5. Long Nap: After our adventures, Cooper was ready to rest!

Thanks to inspiration from The BFF Bucket List, I put aside my usual Saturday chores and enjoyed some special time with Cooper.
Hop over to TheBFFBucketList.com and start your own adventure today!

Blackhearts

Blackbeard the pirate was known for striking fear in the hearts of the bravest of sailors. But once he was just a young man who dreamed of leaving his rigid life behind to chase adventure in faraway lands. Nothing could stop him—until he met the one girl who would change everything.

Edward "Teach" Drummond, son of one of Bristol's richest merchants, has just returned from a year-long journey on the high seas to find his life in shambles. Betrothed to a girl he doesn’t love and sick of the high society he was born into, Teach dreams only of returning to the vast ocean he’d begun to call home. There's just one problem: convincing his father to let him leave and never come back.

Following her parents' deaths, Anne Barrett is left penniless and soon to be homeless. Though she’s barely worked a day in her life, Anne is forced to take a job as a maid in the home of Master Drummond. Lonely days stretch into weeks, and Anne longs for escape. How will she ever realize her dream of sailing to CuraƧao—where her mother was born—when she's stuck in England?

From the moment Teach and Anne meet, they set the world ablaze. Drawn to each other, they’re trapped by society and their own circumstances. Faced with an impossible choice, they must decide to chase their dreams and go, or follow their hearts and stay.
